It's not that the ALARM file is played whether the phone is picked up or not. It is that the distant phone doesn't ring because the modem has hung up the line as soon as it finishes dialling. The distant phone will only ring if I prolong the dialling operation by putting commas at the end., but the modem disconnects as soon as this artificially prolonged dialling operation stops. I tried the "voice file before" trick because I saw it suggested in the forum, but it made no difference.
