Cannot connect directly to Com Port

I am replacing an existing XP machine with the site standard SOE running Windows 7. I have installed MAWNET V7.6.1 (upgrade from V5) however, the ability to connect phonne directly to COM port seems to be greyed out in the Tools menu. Also, the COM port does not seem to be recognized as an available device when I do a search for devices under the preferences or quick setup.
HELP.
