You have the reason, the speed was too high, however the modem documentation say that it can handle 115200bds and the only INS references for work with a wavecom modem make a mention for installing it like a 56000bps modem, so I was very confused.
For future references, this kind of modem have an autobauding function that it has to be cancelled and force it to work with 9600bds. It can be done with AT+IPR=9600 in hyperterminal.
