A list of modems that we tested with MSCS is located under http://www.mawnet.com/modemtest.html.
One modem that works quite well (and is available in Australia) is the USRobotics Message modem and also highly recommended. You may try and request your shop to give you a couple of modems on loan, so that you can test their voice quality befor you buy one.
