Probable false alarm.

I suspect that by removing the Cr characters from my text file it may have made the message short enough to send (156 bytes down to 147 bytes). So perhaps it was the length of the message rather than the existence of Cr's that was causing the message to fail (though i would have expected a 156 byte file to send as it should be less than the 160 char limit but who knows).

I havent tested conclusively on this so the jury is still out.
