Motorola V188 - Compatible?

I just installed the most recent version of SMS-it! from the MAW Web site, on a Windoze XP system, and was trying to use it with my Motorola V188, connected by a USB cable. The terminal window suggests that the phone and program are communicating. When I attempt to send an SMS through the phone, I see the following in the Terminal window:

[2008/01/18 17:13:50.468] Launched message ID=20080118171350000

[2008/01/18 17:13:59.625] There is no compatible mobile phone connected to the COM port => Motorola USB Modem #4

(and then a pop-up window with the error).

I see several other users report this behavior, and none of them seem to have gotten any sort of satisfactory guidance as to what may be wrong.

There is clearly communication back and forth...is it that my cell phone is incompatible with SMS-it?
