NOKIA 6600 - Connectivity Issues

Having installed, registered and validated the product i cannot get the application to register the presence of the phone. Connectivity is via the direct link using "standard modem over IR link", that said i have attempted the direct COM options as my laptop indicated that IR was operating on COM4 but still no luck. I have attempted so many variations of com port, speed rate etc that my mind is a blur.
I am able to connect to NOKIA SUITE 6600 without any issue [shame it does not have sms capabilities] and the phone/ laptop running XP Pro connectivity is fine. Please help so i do not regret my purchase
