modem settings for agere win modem

I have caller id on my phone line and the modem documentation states that it supports caller id, with attention code = AT+VCID=1 for formatted and =2 for unformatted. but i cannot seem to get the modem set up for caller id. any ideas? I have this same modem, also known as lucent, on my other 2 computers. or at least the who calls never responds. i just assumed the modem was not set up right.
