Thanks for the info.
The character set is sent before the actual message. In the terminal output you added to your first message we could not see the response of the mobile to this request. Can you please try to send a message again and paste here the entire log. Thanks.
What is the message you try to send ?
Just send a simple string like "Hello" to start with, this should be independant from the character set used.
Also please be aware that sending empty strings may not be supported.
