As a followup on this, I uninstalled the software on the server and reinstalled it locally (rather than via remote desktop).

For future reference, should anyone care to try, disabling the "mute audio" remote desktop feature is NOT sufficient to get things going. You MUST launch it directly from the console. You may, in fact, need to also install it directly from the console as well. When I did, everything worked perfectly first time thru.
