The contact DB size can not be increased.
As a big contact DB is mostly only used with automated systems we recommend indeed to use an external SQL DB to store the contact info, and submit the messages from there through the command line interface SendMsg.exe.
If you explain a little further on your need to have 500+ contacts we may ev. advise on what to do.
