I would also recommend to start using ActiveX instead of DDE.
The sample
C:\MsgServer\SampleScripts\VoiceScripts\ActiveX with Excel
shows a good sample on how to use the WScript.Quit() to return values. As far as I know Citect has also an ActiveX interface you can use to read variables.
