Error Answering : Device did not report CONNECT

Hi - I'm trying to set up an IVR system for our organization. I'm using a BestData windows V92 voice modem which works with other applications. When I dial in, the script properly goes off hook, but does not play the greeting message or do anything else. To be sure it's not the script, I started using one of your sample scripts - which should work. Here is an extract of the system log:
[2008/11/23 16:39:27.252] [Channel #01] Call [0x00FFD73C] state: IDLE

[2008/11/23 16:48:15.972] [Channel #01] Call [0x00FFD73C] state: IDLE

The only problem here appears to be the error message: Error Answering : Device did not report CONNECT - even though the log clearly indicates a the call state is connected. The message server will record DTMF tones it hears (see log) but take no action.

Would appreciate any help! Thanks! Bill
