We never used ATT Natural Voices, hence can not really advise here.
The fact that it crashes when playing though the modem but noth through the simulator points to a problem with the voice format (Modem expects PCM 8000 Hz, 16 bit Mono). If you select a different format Message Server will try to convert it internally to the required format, using the installed CODEC... so perhaps there is a problem with the required CODEC.
